I’ve been on a journey to understand humans when it comes to matters of love. I honestly don’t want to start a series on that yet but last night, I had the opportunity to give a quick talk at an elegant Valentine’s Day Dinner event. I was so blessed to see so many couples, friends and some singles like myself and the love and peace that emanated was so saturating.
I thought to myself, why can’t every day be this loving? How difficult is it to love if both parties can choose to be selfless, honest and determined to grow each other into excellence? Call me a hopeless romantic but I believe in true love. I believe there are people on earth who have understood what true love is and are practicing it daily.
I learned from a mentor that the ultimate index for measuring love is through SACRIFICE. So I ask myself, what am I willing to sacrifice for this person and what are they willing to sacrifice for me? It always points me to the greatest love I have ever known – the love of Christ. It’s easy to say Christ is not human so you can’t compare his love to us humans but if He could love you and I, with all our flaws and short-comings, then why can’t we do the same for our fellows?
John 15:13
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
What this scripture is saying is that there’s no greater love that supersedes sacrificing for each other.
When we die to self, sacrifice becomes easy. We are able to show sensitivity towards others and be a bit kinder to their needs. We want others to excel and experience peace in their lives. We want the best for them as much as we want it for ourselves.
My prayer this week is that we will see life beyond ourselves. Make it our mission to show Christlike love to the people in our lives and community. Let this happen for us in Jesus’ name. AMEN!
XOXO,
Lady Abena.
